December Delivers: Risks Loom, but Jobs Stay Strong

Today’s Labour Force Survey (LFS) results for December complete a year in which Canada’s labour slackened amid weakening labour demand and strong labour force gains underpinned by surging international migration. Over 2024, the unemployment rate rose from 5.7 per cent in January to 6.7 per cent in December.

Trade Deficit Narrows to $323 Million in November

Canada’s merchandise exports were up 2.2 per cent in November mainly due to higher exports of consumer goods. Meanwhile, total imports rose 1.8 per cent on the back of increased imports of consumer goods, and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products. As a result, Canada’s merchandise trade deficit narrowed to $323 million in November.
