2017 Waterloo Region Business Outlook

Thursday September 7 2017 Crowne Plaza Kitchener-Waterloo Kitchener, Ontario

Overview

Economic growth in the Waterloo region has outpaced that the province as a whole for 10 of the last 11 years. However, economic growth has slipped to approximately 2 per cent annually between 2016 and 2018, down from a 3 per cent average over the previous 6 years.

Even in the midst of this slowdown, the Waterloo Region will continue to attract newcomers. Net in-migration hit a 10-year high of roughly 4,200 people last year, and another 3,600 are expected to arrive this year. Construction has been a long-term success story and the light rail project is boosting the sector this year. Housing starts exceeded 4,000 units in 2016 for just the third time in the past 20 years. Manufacturing growth is expected to slow this year, but accelerate in 2018.

Beyond regional boundaries, global economic and geo-political uncertainty will require business leaders and policy-makers to make difficult decisions. Get the latest and most comprehensive economic analysis in the country from The Conference Board of Canada to navigate this uncertain business climate at the first 2017 Waterloo Region Business Outlook

Senior economists from one of Canada’s most respected forecasting organizations drill deep into the factors driving the outlook for the province and metropolitan region, all set within a national and international context. In addition to the Conference Board’s economic forecasts and analysis, the 2017 Waterloo Region Business Outlook will feature a keynote address on the future of automated vehicles, and a lively panel discussion on key regional industries such as auto manufacturing, technology and the food sector.
